Karma Yoga

goddess-buddha-2In the West, it’s too often believed that yoga is just fancy gymnastics. But the physical aspect of yoga is such a tiny tip of the spiritual iceberg. Branching out from the cultural norm of the typical asana practice, allows us to try other forms of yoga which have more of a spiritual objective. Karma yoga is complete selfless service.

We’re so attached to outcomes, we very rarely practice loving acts without expecting at least a little something in return.

During Karma yoga day at Agama (my beloved school), I was tempting to take a day off. My ego didn’t want to go to school unless I had classes because I just didn’t feel like it. An hour later I found myself scrubbing down and cleaning yoga mats, dusting off cushions and blankets, and sweeping yoga halls. I realized that something greater in me had made the decision to practice karma yoga. It felt awesome. I was surprised that, without even thinking, I was drawn to help and willingly offer myself out of pure devotion.

Selfless action creates a vibratory pattern that leads to higher mind states. Don’t take my word for it. Try it yourself and see how warm and fuzzy you feel! Boost and harmonize your karma by doing something awesome for someone today just because!

“You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.”    ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
